Elegant Filigree Monogram Card by Diane

The outer portion of this design is created using a corner element from the Storybook Cricut cartridge. I placed a sizing rectangle for an A2 note card on the virtual mat and rotated the element into position using the rectangle as a guideline. (The rectangle I used for the guide is from the George cartridge but you do not need George to cut the file). The elements overlapped at the top and bottom of the card and I added a very thin rectangle from Storybook to form a frame connecting the top and bottom sections.

After I made the frame, I added an element from the Home Accents cartridge. I used “Hide Selected Contour” to eliminate the inner cutting lines and create a solid center to the medallion. You can see the hidden cutting lines in pale blue in the screen shot above. To hide a contour or cutting line you select the line by left clicking to select the line – it will turn into a dotted red line when you have selected it properly. Then right click and choose “Hide Selected Contour” from the bottom of the pop-up menu – the line will then appear in a very pale blue. Finally, I added an initial from the Storybook font in the center of the medallion (I used my own initial for this sample!). You can delete the “D” and add whatever letter you need, making sure to center it in the medallion.

By carefully saving the “off cut” pieces you can create a second monogram card with a different look – I always try to use my paper as efficiently as possible. Remember to save the center of any letters like “D” or “B” so you can add them to the negative space on the framed card to complete the letter. The actual letter cut is used on this second version of the card.

I used Die Cuts with a View “Luxury Stack” paper for this delicate cut. You want to be sure that your paper is well stuck down on the mat, that you have a sharp blade and that the cardstock you use is relatively thin with a “hard” finish in order to get a clean cut with this intricate design. You can cut this with good quality thicker paper but will probably have trouble with tearing if you try lightweight patterned paper.

Here is another sample done in different colors – the design is cut from heavyweight double sided paper. These cuts should be adhered to the card by using a glue pen to be sure that all the tiny details are well secured. This design can be cut on any of the Cricut machines if you have Design Studio and the Storybook and Home Accents cartridges.

You can also use the frame alone for a different look. You could keep the center medallion and eliminate the initial or add a different element – many variations are possible with this design. I think these would make an elegant wedding gift and would be lovely used for thank you notes for any formal occasion.
