Hydrangea Flowerpot Layered Card by Susan

Do you find that there are cuts on your cartridges that intimidate you? For me it has been the hydrangeas on the Walk in My Garden (WIMG) cartridge. I have long admired those beautiful and bountiful hydrangeas, but feared that cutting them would be an exercise in frustration. But pleasantly I found I had “nothing to fear but….” well, you know the rest of that FDR quote.

I designed this lovely 3-D card using only the WIMG cartridge. There are only three pages to the cut design, but it requires careful measuring and paper placement. The first page of the cut file is a complicated layering and welding of shapes that creates the card base. On the photo above you can see that your paper choice for the base cut will not only show on the inside of you card, but also in the area between the flowers and the pot.

Cut the card base with the right side of the paper facing up, as the right side of the card is the front. Fold the card in half and set aside.

Page two of the cut file creates the beautiful triple layer hydrangea petals for the card front. Because the cut for the flowers has all three pieces on a single key, you cannot nudge the pieces further apart. In this case careful placement of the image on the virtual mat and careful placement of the paper on cutting mat is required. You can see from the image below that I used the grids on the mats to help with placement.

By moving the image so that the 3 inch line runs between the flower pieces horizontally and the 2 inch and 8 inch lines run between the pieces vertically, placing of the paper on the cutting mat ensures more accurate cuts. See the image below for paper placement on the cutting mat.

The final page of the cut file contains the cuts for the two piece tag, the flowerpot top layer, and the stems and leaves. You will need to use four pieces of paper for these cuts: two colors for the tag, a color for the flowerpot, and a nice green for the stems and leaves. As mentioned above, use the grid lines to determine where to place your paper. Also, notice that the flower portion of the stems and leaves are purposely placed off of the mat. This is to prevent them from cutting. Your cricut will cut the edge of the mat and no further.

Assembly of your card will be time consuming. I found the use of my piercing tool (or as I call it, “my pokey tool”) to be invaluable in removing the small cuts in the flower pieces. I used small pop dots to layer the top five petals (with brads for centers) on each of the flowers. I trimmed all leaves except the far right leaf on the far right stem from the stems. I placed the two middle leaves on the outside of the pot, seemingly attached to the left stem. Finally I used garden rub-ons from my stash to enhance the flowerpot and card.

This card could be a lovely Mother’s Day card, friendship card, or a special any occasion card. I truly enjoyed creating this cut file and this card, and best of all, I no longer fear the hydrangea cut!

this looks like a challenge. But I am willing to try --- WIMG is one of my fav carts. And I have a friend who gave me a hydrangea plant who would get a kick out of this card.
