I needed a little gift box for a special teacher friend. As I contemplated her life and what she deals with and encounters daily, I thought of. . .book bags! I know, I know – you thought I would say apples! But seriously, that would be such a cliché. So, yes, a book bag!
To create this file you will need two Cricut cartridges - Tags, Bags, Boxes, and More and Storybook - and four coordinating pieces of printed cardstock.
The base of the book bag is made using the Inch Bag cut from TBBM. The inch bag should be placed on the cutting mat so that it is extended fully across the width of the mat. You will notice that the ribbon holes have been blocked from cutting using the "Hide Selected Contour" feature.

The second page of the .cut file contains the two cuts for the book bag top flap. The image on the right is the bottom layer of the flap. Cut the pieces using two of your card stock patterns.

The last page of the .cut file contains the cuts for the front pocket and its closure flap. I used a dark print paper to cut my front pocket so that it would “pop” on the light background of the book bag. You will note two rows of score cuts – this will enable you to make the front pocket three dimensional. And again, like above, the flap should be cut using two coordinating pieces of card stock, though just to “mix it up a bit,” I used a different paper as the base of the mini-flap than I used for the larger flap.

To assemble your book bag, you will need coordinating ribbon and eyelets, buttons or decorative brads for the flap closures, and adhesive backed Velcro. Begin by adhering the flap bases and tops together. Set all of the holes on the front edge of the larger flap with eyelets. Fold the double-layer flap in half across the middle using the tips of the decorative cut to determine the middle. The middle line will rest across the front edge of the box when assembled. Make a second fold half-way between the middle and the back edge. This fold will rest across the top-back edge of the inch box.
Fold the inch box along all of the scored fold lines, but do not glue closed yet. Line up the back of the flap at the back top of the inch box using your fold marks . Pick two holes and mark their location on the inch box; punch a one-eighth inch hole at each mark. Use two eyelets, in addition to your favorite strong adhesive, to adhere the top flap to the box. Add two more eyelets halfway down the back of the box, directly below the upper two eyelets.

Your next step will be to fold the front pocket into shape. Add adhesive to all of the back edges. Prepare the flap to be attached: fold in half laterally, then again 1/3 of an inch behind the middle fold. The midway fold will line up with the front edge of the pocket, the second fold should line up with the back edge of the pocket. Use strong adhesive and attach the back of the flap to the back of the box. Again using a strong adhesive, adhere the pocket and flap to the lower middle front of the inch box (about 1 inch from the bottom).
One last step before closing the box - add the ribbon. Run the ribbon through the eyelets, knotting the inside to secure the ribbon. Now you may finally use a strong adhesive and close the box.
The final step to complete your book bag is to add the Velcro to the flaps and to add the buttons (or decorative brads) to the flaps.
I hope you enjoy the book bag as much as my teacher friend enjoyed hers.

Submitted by Susan I absolutely love your idea. Everything was great but I would like to make a suggestion: When the article first opens, it clearly notes that you will need TBBM and Storybook. However, after the first page, it just says to make two cuts for the book bag top and doesn't designate at that point to change cartridges to Storybook. Also, I never found where you got the cut for the front pocket. I did download the whole thing but still would like to know exactly where to locate that "cut". Thanks, Susan Smith

Submitted by Ruby This is an adorable box!!! What size did you cut the main box from? Is it done on a Cricut Expression or on the Basic Cricut machine. Nice!!!
