Sweet Pea by Susan

I have a confession: when my first Cricut was brand new – you know WAY BACK in the days before the Expression machine & Design Studio – all I ever really did was cut page titles and an occasional flower or two. Then came Design Studio and I started adding shapes – genies, Mickey’s, welded mesh titles. . .so many new ideas were circling in my head. But never back then did I consider cutting all of my layout elements with the Cricut.

Many of us have seen the sketch-inspired layouts. So I wondered why we could not do that with Design Studio and our Cricut cartridges. And you know what I discovered? We can!!

The cut file contains all of the elements you will need to create two cute 12 x 12 pages. You will need two cartridges to complete the cuts: New Arrival and Mini Monograms. Most of the design is completed with the New Arrival cartridge, but the scalloped-background pieces are cut using Mini Monograms.

The pages in the design have been labeled to make cutting less confusing. The first two pages of the design are previews only and should not be cut. They will provide a visual reminder at a later date of what the design should look like when complete.

Pages one and two:

First you will cut the pea pods, stems and “vine” pieces. I used three different colors of green cardstock – one light green 6x12 piece on the left side of the mat to cut the pea pods, one 6x4 piece of dark green to cut the upper right stem pieces, and a medium green to cut the vines. A sharp blade is a must for the little curls on the pod stems.

Another page of the cut file contains the Sweet Pea phrase as well as the butterflies and other shapes. I used the same medium green from my vines for my words. I chose a solid peach and a pink and peach pattern for the butterflies.

The next page in the cut file is the photo mats. I chose a pretty medium peach color for my four mats – three photo mats and one journaling block.

The next page contains the cuts for the baby peas and the pod centers. You will notice that the top half of the mat has both dark and light lines. The dark lines will cut with the Cricut; the light blue lines have been removed from the cut using the "Hide Selected Contour" feature. The lower half of the mat shows all of the pieces, but you should cut the bottom section in the color you want to use for the baby faces. The pods from the bottom half of the page will be disposed of.

The last page of the cut file contains the background scalloped square. You should cut this page twice, once for each of the 12 x 12 pages. I chose sweet peach and white gingham for the scalloped background.

Assembly of this layout may seem a bit overwhelming, but in fact it went together quickly.

1. Use strong adhesive and attach you scalloped squares to the base page cardstock (I used the same medium peach that was used for the photo mats).

2. Layout the words, vines, and pea pods on the pages to establish a layout placement.

3. Ink the edges of the photo mats and glue them onto the background. Add the white journaling block and the B-A-B-Y letter cutouts.

4. Beginning with the large pea pod, glue down the pea pods and vines, the works and the tiny peas.

5. Attach the butterflies and the baby faces and you are all done. I finished my layout by adding white eyelet-like dots to my photo mats, as well as doodling. You could also use icicle stickles to further enhance your layout.

I am sorry to be so long in answering your question. I will leave the answer here and in the latest location.... You taught me that I need to go back and check all of the comments regularly.

I goofed! The vine is on Wild Card. I forgot to list it in the required cartridges. I am truly sorry.... What a slip up!

Thank you for the kind words!

This is fabulous. Where did you get the "vine pieces from"? I'm going to be a grandmother for the firs time and I can't wait to take pictures of my own sweet pea and do this layout. I just can't figure out how you did the vines. I don't find them on either cartridge.
