My husband is a HUGE football fan… Except like all fans he has a team that is his least favorite also. We recently celebrated my husband’s fiftieth birthday with family and friends. When I asked my younger son what he wanted to get his dad for his birthday he responded, “Some Falcons stuff for him to burn in his fire pit!” This made me laugh because his dad WOULD like that!
After brainstorming this idea I realized that I could make football players using Everyday Paper Dolls. Ian and I went to the store and found a box of “fire starters” and our plan was cemented!
To create this cut file you will need a team your husband really dislikes (!), the Everyday Paper Doll Cartridge with the downloaded cut file, fire starters, thin wire, and assorted cardstock to match your least-favorite team. There are five pages in the cut file and the first is a preview only and should not be cut.

The second page of the cut file contains the cuts for the player’s jersey and pants. You will need three colors of cardstock to cut this page: a 6 x 12 inch piece on the right side of the mat for the shadow cuts, a 6 x 4 inch piece for the jersey, and a 6 x 4 inch piece for the pants.

Page three of the cut file contains the cuts for the player’s helmet, sock and shoes, and a football. You will need four pieces of cardstock to cut page: a 6 x 6 inch piece for the helmet, a 6 x 4 inch piece for the shoes, a 4 x 4 inch square for the football, and a 3 x 4 inch piece for the socks.

The fifth and final page of the cut file contains the cuts for player numbers, top cuts and shadows. You may choose to personalize the numbers to match those of your hubby’s least favorite player. My husband snatched up number 2 for his first fire, and was thrilled that number 2 was on of the fire starters!

Once you have cut your players you are ready to assemble. I found a good photo of the team uniform on the Internet and used this to help me make the uniforms more personalized. I added marker lines and gel pen marks to match the extra lines on the jersey and pants.
Using your favorite adhesive affix the layers of jerseys together and affix the layers of pants together. Attach the pants and the jersey to the player body. Glue the socks and shoes onto the body.
Add colored paper behind your player’s eyes for color. Add any facial hair or other embellishments to the player’s faces. Add any drawing or letters that might be needed to embellish the helmet and affix the helmet to the player’s head.
Using very thin wire, loop the wire around the player’s neck (under the edge of the helmet) to the back side of the player. You may also add a loop at his waist. Secure a fire starter to the player’s back.

I made two different groups of players for my husband’s birthday, Atlanta Falcons and Notre Dame. As you can see in the photos, using different papers will create different end results.

The gold metallic paper was wonderful on the Notre Dame players.

My husband LOVED his fire starters, as did the guests at his party. The fire starters were passed person to person and everyone thought they were adorable.

We finished the evening outdoors with a fire in the fire pit and Doug was thrilled!
