Dreamy Wedding Cake Card by Susan

Remember the old song by The Ronnettes:

“Spring is here, the sky is blue. Whooooa! The birds all sing as if they knew. Today's the day, we'll say, ‘I do’ … and we'll never be lonely anymore. Because we're going to the chapel and we're, gonna get married…..”

Well it IS that season where so many couples are getting married. And I don’t know about you, but I hate having the “run of the mill” card and gift at any occasion, but especially at something as lovely and personal as a wedding. But guess what? The cricut WILD CARD cartridge makes it possible for cricut users to have a unique and special card for any occasion! And in the spirit of wedding season, I thought I would share with you the special wedding card I plan to give to Megan and Brandon.

This card is cut completely with the Wild Card cartridge. You will need at least two colors of card stock, but preferably three. The cut file is organized with page tabs to tell you which cuts are on each page. On the first page you will be cutting the card base (probably in white) and two cuts of the front of the card only. You can see that I positioned the back half of the cake cards off of the cutting mat so that you will not have to waste your paper. I used a single sheet of white card stock to cut everything on this sheet. Set aside all of the cake pieces.

The second page of the cut file features the cuts you will use to create the cake embellishments. Specifically you will see the cake flowers and the decorative frosting. I enlarged some of the flowers and cut the larger flowers in a ecru bling card stock. The smaller flowers I cut in the Bazzil Ecru Bling card stock as well as pink card stock. I used this same ecru card stock to cut the frosting pieces as well. You may question the ovals on the cut mat. They will cut the frosting into pieces to allow it to go further when assembling. Remember to pay close attention to the grids on your mat when placing more than one color of paper on the cutting mat. The grids allow for more precise cuts and help prevent the wasting of paper.

The last page of the cut file is the envelope cut. The image is placed on the mat at an angle to allow for maximum “stretch”. The envelope needed to be a bit larger than could be achieved with typical vertical and horizontal placement. The little wedding cake image in the corner of the mat should be cut in ecru bling card stock. The envelope should be cut in white paper.

To assemble you card you should begin by folding the card base in half, lining up the top and bottom evenly. Next you will need to trim the edges from the two cake front pieces. Just even off the edge of the bottom layer where it hung off of the mat. Next you will take one of the card fronts and cut out just the layer pieces. You will cut off the top layer and set it aside. Next you will cut off the middle layer, but also remove the “top” part of the middle layer (the part located between the top layer and the curved line at the top edge of the middle layer). Finally you will trim away the same “top” piece of the bottom layer. See the photo for example of the cake pieces you will need, as well as to give you an idea as to why we cut the layers apart. Additionally, I used the Swiss Dot Cuttle Bug folder to emboss the three individual layers once they were cut apart.

Before you build the 3-D effect front of the card, you should begin my attaching the frosting pieces. Add a large frosting piece to the bottom edge of the base card front (see above). Add a line of frosting across the curved lines at the bottom edge of the top, middle and bottom layers on card front #2. And finally you will place frosting pieces on the layer that was cut into three individual pieces. Place frosting strips at the top of the bottom layer, and at the top edge (over the curved line) of the top layer.

The final step prior to full assembly is attaching the flowers to the layers. You can refer to the photographs to see where and how I used the flowers. Bear in mind that the flowers should complement the entire cake, but not steal the show.

And finally you are ready to whip out your pop dots and build the 3-D front of the card. You should use your pop dots to attach the #2 card front over top of the base card. And again using your pop dots, attach the top individual layers to the #2 layer. Your card should have three layers of front pieces, plus embellishments, which work together to create a beautiful and elegant card. See the photographs for layer and front details.
