I really shouldn’t admit this, but I love girly-girly designs. Generally I only display my girly-girl crafts in my scrapping room. I have framed dresses, shoes and purse sets cut with cricut and hung on my scrap room wall. The whole room is pink and white with touches of black. It is my own private girly domain!
Many of you may know that I am on another web-based design team. Last October one of our challenges was to use Belle’s dress from the Dreams Come True cartridge for our weekly project. I did a pink, black and white (of course) blinged-out card. This month I revisited the Dreams Come True cartridge and decided to design a new project just for you!
Straying a bit from my usual pink & white, I decided to expand my horizons and prove to myself that girly does not have to be pink. In fact, I quite like the subtle hues of the spring aqua in Belle’s new dress! You may, of course, choose whatever colors you prefer.
When you open the cut file you will immediately notice that it is only two pages. Yes, that is a bit different than my normal cut files. In this case, less IS best! Also unlike my usual cut files, there IS NOT a preview page. Page one of the cut file contains the card base, at full dress for the second layer, and two bodice pieces with one set of skirt trims. I used the HIDE SELECTED CONTOURS function (right click the mouse while the image is highlighted) to remove the second set of skirt trims. If you look closely you can see the light blue lines that will not cut.
To cut the pieces on page one, you will need four different pieces of paper or card stock, at least three of them should be patterned. You will need 1 – 6 x 12 piece of solid (at least on one side) to cut the base card. One piece for the first layer of dress, one piece for bodice #1 and the skirt trim, and one final piece for the second bodice. Cut the pieces and set them aside.
You are now ready to cut page two. Again you will see that I used the Hide Selected Contour feature. On this page you will see one more dress layer, two more bodice pieces, and a final set of skirt trims. These should be cut in three colors of paper/card stock. You may repeat the same dress and bodice papers as you will just be building upwards on the card base. However, the skirt trims should be cut in a different paper. This will allow for contrast in the layering. Cut the pieces and then you will be ready to assemble.
The first step of assembly is to fold the card base in half at the shoulders, lining up the front and back parts of the card. Next, using pop dots, add the second full dress piece on top of the front of the card. You will repeat this pop dot and dress front layering a second time so that you should now have three layers of dress – the base, the middle layer, and the top layer.
Now you are ready to work on the bodice pieces. I am going to confess that I only used two of the bodice pieces in the example. I used a solid piece on the bottom and added a nice coordinating plaid over top. I attached these pieces to the dress bodice area. You, however, can add pop dots or you can cut the bodice pieces in half and sew in some tiny laces and a little bow – whatever you would like to do to make your card uniquely yours. I took the easy route.
The skirt trim pieces are a bit more challenging. You will need micro-tipped very sharp scissors. Begin by deciding which of your two sets of skirt trims will go on bottom and which will go on top. Using your scissors, very carefully cut the bottom dress trim pieces in half vertically. This can be a bit of a challenge on the scallops. Bear in mind that the cuts do not have to be pretty as they will be hid under the top layer. This cut will allow the base to show beneath the top layer of skirt trim. I will confess that I used the Cuttle Bug Swiss Dot embossing folder to add more detail to my top layer skirt pieces. Once you have cut the pieces, you should glue them together and attach them to the dress front. (See the next photo for an example).
Now you are ready to add your final embellishments and complete your card. You can see that I added a bit of cotton lace to the sleeves and hem, as well as aqua flowers, organza ribbon, and bling. I managed to prove to myself that girly does not always come in just pink!
