Baby Flyboys by Susan

Don’t you just love babies? I do. They are so soft and they smell so good (well, most of the time anyway)! My husband used to hold our babies securely and let them fly around the room. Of course they were no longer newborns when he played this game with them, but his “super baby” game was the inspiration for this month’s second baby layout: Baby Flyboys!

To complete this layout you will need the following five Cricut cartridges: Doodlecharms – for the bear, George and Basic Shapes – for the bear’s flight helmet, Going Places – for the clouds, New Arrival – for the adorable airplanes, and Plantin Schoolbook - for the text in the clouds. There are other clouds on other cartridges, but I was really drawn to the large fluffy puffs of the Going Places’ clouds.

As you open the cut file in Design Studio (DS) you will see that all of the page tabs are labeled and the first two are PREVIEWS only and should not be cut. These pages will serve as a reminder of what the layout looked like should you choose to cut at a later time. The other tabs are labeled according to the content. I tried to combine cuts where possible. For example you will notice that all of the clouds are cut on the same mat.

And speaking of the clouds, you will notice that the “title” clouds on the left page of the layout reads “2 Months Old”. You can change the 2 to any number you choose. Simply click on the 2 to delete, and then replace with a different number. Or another option for you, you can delete all three words (2 Months Old) and type in your baby’s name: LUCAS. Changing the text will allow you to personalize the page to suit your scrapping needs.

As you work on this layout you may feel as if you are doing an excessive amount of cutting. Quite honestly there are a lot of pieces to the airplanes. Organization will be your friend when completing this project! Keep your page elements in little piles according to what they are. For example keep the large plane pieces in one pile, the small planes in another pile, and the bear and his helmet in a pile. This will make assembly MUCH easier.

When you open the tab in DS with the airplane details you will probably notice a lot of light blue colored shapes next to black colored shapes. I used the “hide selected contour” feature to keep from cutting pieces that would not be used. The light blue areas will not cut, only the more bolded lines.

Hide Selected Contour is a semi-new feature in Design Studio, and one of which that I am especially fond. When you place an image on the virtual mat this feature allows you to select which parts you want to cut. For example if you have an image of a flower and leaves, you can click on a leaf until the image turns red. With the image still red, click the RIGHT side of your mouse and at the bottom of the menu choose “HIDE SELECT CONTOUR.” You have just removed this leaf from the final cut. This an especially nice cut for situations like the airplane accessories – we did not need the banners, etc.

After you have finished cutting out the many pieces of the layout it will be time to assemble the layout. You should begin with the airplane shadow pieces on the bottom. When you refer to my photos the shadow pieces are navy blue and the top pieces are light blue. Attach the light blue plane pieces (the top layer) to the navy base. You do this for both the large and small planes. Finally attach the detail pieces (the red pieces on the photo example): the propellers and the wings. Once finished set the planes aside and assemble the bear. The lower half of the bear can be thrown away as he should cut in half during the cutting process. The bear’s helmet is an optional accessory.

After assembling your pieces you may want to ink the edges of the clouds. I used a light blue ink around the edges. My background paper is light blue and white micro-stripe so I felt the blue ink helped the clouds keep from getting lost in the page. I attached the clouds to the background first and then added the planes. My final touch was to use a navy marker and color in my words. I could have put navy paper behind the words, but I preferred the ink. But note: if you would like to embellish a bit more, you can use your favorite micro tipped pen and add dashes in a looped design to represent your planes’ flight paths!!

You have just created a cute, cute layout for your little flyboy. I will be providing two girl layouts next month, but do not worry – the boys will be back in two months!!! Happy scrapping!
